Herring of the Year 2022 with the flavor of Apple & Mint launches on June 6
Herring of the Year is now being launched for the fourteenth year in a row. One Friday in March, the Sea Rescue station on Rörö in the Gothenburg archipelago was visited by Klädesholmen Seafood and the restaurant Salt & Sill, who presented the selected nominated herring recipes. The jury, as always consisting of highly dedicated sea rescuers, cast their votes for the herring they liked best. The big winner was the summery herring with notes of Apple & Mint. The flavors evoke thoughts of a summer garden, with apple trees in full bloom and fresh mint sprouting.
The Herring of the Year project is a collaboration between the restaurant and conference venue Salt & Sill on Klädesholmen and the herring producer Klädesholmen Seafood. The goal is to develop new, exciting, and innovative herring recipes while also contributing to the important work of the Swedish Sea Rescue Society.
The proposals for Herring of the Year are developed by Salt & Sill and its staff. After the jury’s decision, Klädesholmen Seafood takes on the task of adapting the chosen recipe for factory production and ensuring a longer shelf life.
One krona per sold jar of herring goes directly to the Swedish Sea Rescue Society and their mission to improve safety at sea. The Sea Rescue Society operates through its 71 stations along Sweden’s long coastline and in the large lakes, where 2,200 volunteer rescuers are on standby around the clock, year-round.
The herring launches on June 6, coinciding with the celebration of Herring Day.
