On Herring Day this past Sunday, the annual check from the sales of “Herring of the Year” was presented. The 2020 Herring of the Year, flavored with Gin and Elderflower, generated SEK 75,000 for the Swedish Sea Rescue Society.
Herring Day on June 6 was celebrated this year all across Tjörn – spread out and in a COVID-safe manner.
All around Tjörn, Herring Day was marked by offering tasting plates with three varieties of herring. The proceeds from the plates went in full to the genuine work of the Swedish Sea Rescue Society.
On Klädesholmen, representatives from the Sea Rescue Society were present from the station in Skärhamn. There they received the check from the sales of the 2020 Herring of the Year, where one krona per sold jar is donated annually to the Sea Rescue Society. Annika Fogelström Helmer, CEO of Klädesholmen Seafood and representative for Herring of the Year, handed over the check to the representatives of the Sea Rescue Society. The money goes to the nationwide organization, where stations around the country can apply for funding for potential investments.
Herring of the Year is a collaboration between Klädesholmen Seafood and the restaurant Salt & Sill on Klädesholmen. Each year, a jury selects the Herring of the Year. The aim is to create new, exciting, and innovative herring picklings. Salt & Sill prepares four modern herring recipes every year for Herring of the Year and then presents them to a jury, which ultimately selects the winner. Once the flavor has been chosen, Klädesholmen takes on the task of refining the recipe to ensure the taste is exactly as intended, while at the same time preparing for production.
Herring of the Year 2021 – Crab & Corn
For the thirteenth year in a row, Herring of the Year was launched. One Monday in February, the Sea Rescue station in Fjällbacka, Bohuslän, was visited by Klädesholmen Seafood and the restaurant Salt & Sill, who presented the four nominated herring recipes. The jury, consisting of highly dedicated sea rescuers, cast their votes in the usual manner for the herring they liked best. The big winner was a creamy herring with crab, complemented by the freshness of lemon and dill. A herring that evokes thoughts of seafood feasts and warm summer evenings!
One SEK per sold jar of herring goes directly to the Sea Rescue Society and their work for increased safety at sea. The Sea Rescue Society works for greater safety at sea. Through its 71 stations along Sweden’s long coastline and in the large lakes, 2,200 volunteer sea rescuers are on call around the clock, year-round. Herring of the Year 2021 will be available in stores from June 6, 2021, for one year.
